Overview

It is a trip that goes through easy, wide and flat paths among olive trees fields and wine yards in the region of Castilla-La Mancha, which is the most extensive vineyard region in Europe.

You will find windmills that will remind you the struggle of Don Quixote with them. Likewise, the villages, small towns and hilltops are in the same route referred by Cervantes in his book.

Starting at the village of Belmonte you will find one of the most impressive castles of Spain, the Arab quarter “del Albaicín” in Campo de Criptana. And surrounded by windmills, the Arab castle of Consuegra that was built by Almanzor in the 10th century. In our itinerary you will find many historical places as El Toboso, the hometown of Don Quixote´s beloved Dulcinea; Mota del Cuervo, Alcázar de San Juan and Tembleque’s Plaza Mayor, where the trip ends.

This bike tour gives the opportunity to enjoy recognized wines along typical recipes that have survived many centuries.

Itinerary

Día 1Transportation to Belmonte with rest of the day free

Belmonte is a beautiful “walled” little town where you can visit its amazing castle and the collegiate church, both from the 15th century. You will be lodging in this town the first day of your trip. You can also choose lodging in the Old Alcázar, an Arab castle like construction with Spa facilities

Día 2From Belmonte to Alcazar de San Juan passing by old villages with plenty of windmils

Following the Don Quixote route, we have to leave Belmonte across an easy path of colored fields heading to Mota del Cuervo “to discover” the typical Don Quixote´s windmills. The next stop is El Toboso, the hometown of Don Quixote´s beloved Dulcinea. There, you can visit the Dulcinea’s museum and admire the typical architecture of La Mancha region. Next, among countless Vineyards fields and windmills you will arrive to Campo de Criptana and there, admire the Arab quarter of the Albaicin. You will finish the day at the historical town of Alcazar de San juan and sleep in an old convent of the 16th century.

Día 3Easy path through the countryside among wineyards and more windmills

After visiting Alcazar´s windmills, you will head to a lake area and from there, more old villages and windmills will be waiting for you. By easy and quiet paths you will arrive to the final destination of the day, Puerto Lapice where more windmills appear on a nearby hilltop

Día 4From Puerto Lapice to Tembleque visiting the most beautiful windmills and a 10th century Arab castle at Consuegra

The final cycling day will take you across fields of olive trees and vineyards all the way to the last town of the trip where the last windmills are. These windmills definitely are the most striking ones since they are placed on top of a hilltop and thus made believe Don Quixote they were giants he had to fight with. Beside them, you will find an Arabian castle of 10th century, built by Almazor, the most important ruler of the Muslim’s era in Spain. From there, a tranquil flat path will lead you to the trip’s final destination, Tembleque
